  • Calendula Pessaries are highly recommended for ladies experiencing the menopause. Often the skin can become more fragile, sore and dry. The combination of cocoa butter and soothing calendula can provide some degree of comfort when used daily. Calendula pessaries can also be used during anti-biotic usage and as a gentle preventative for candida.

  • Calendula has been used for medicinal purposes since at least the 12th century It has a long history as a wound healing and skin soothing botanical. It is considered an agent that promotes healing. Calendula also has an anti-inflammatory activity and is used internally to heal inflamed and infected mucous membranes.

  • Topical applications of calendula are more common, especially in Germany where it has been shown to speed healing of wounds (possibly because it increases blood flow to the area).

Insomnia

It can become a real nightmare as the clock ticks into the night….but you are not alone. At any one time, the problem affects around 15 per cent of the UK population.

What’s wrong

Insomnia can take three forms
  1. 1- you toss and turn instead of falling asleep
  2. 2- you fall asleep OK but then wake up repeatedly throughout the night
  3. 3- you wake up much too early and can’t get back to sleep again.

The most common form is emotional stress and depression. Other reasons can include pain or illness, medications (such as decongestants, diuretics, some antidepressants, steroids and beta blockers), eating a heavy meal at night and drinking coffee or alcohol too near bedtime.

Bedtime buddies

Have a banana or a slice of turkey/ chicken before going to bed – these foods contain tryptophan (an amino acid) that the body converts to serotonin.

Carbohydrates, such as a glass of warm milk (unless there is a dairy intolerance) with an added sprinkling of cinnamon will also help tryptophan to enter the brain.

Herbal helpers

Valerian – can help people fall asleep without the hangover effect of some sleeping pills. It binds to the same brain receptors as valium. The herb smells and it is best taken as a tincture an hour before going to bed.

Passionflower- also traditionally used as a mild sedative and nervous system relaxant. Often used with children with an over active mind.

Wild lettuce – for those who enjoyed the tales of Beatrix Potter, it may be remembered that the flopsy bunnies ate wild lettuce and fell asleep, nearly falling into the cooking pot of Mrs McGregor!!  On a more serious note, it is traditionally used as a nerve relaxant and was once a substitute for opium.

A sweet sleep

Lavender essential oil has a reputation as a mild tranquilliser and can be added to a bedtime bath or the pillow.

Jasmine essential oil. One US study discovered that people who spent the night in  jasmine scented rooms slept more peacefully than people who stayed in unscented rooms.

*Avoid alcohol in the evenings – although many believe that alcohol can help you fall asleep, it can actually make you more likely to wake up in the night.
*Smoking – nicotine stimulates the central nervous system and interferes with the ability to fall asleep and stay asleep.
