Varicose veins are formed when the superficial veins (typically in the legs) become stretched and contorted as a result of ineffectual valves in the veins. When the valves, which usually prevent the blood pooling backwards, are damaged and ineffectual, then the blood pools backwards and stretches the veins. The veins become more visually noticeable which may cause a degree of embarrassment to individuals who have them.
Varicose veins frequently become painful when standing for too long as result of the downward force of the blood on the veins. Elevating ones legs encourages the blood to flow towards the heart and prevent pooling and strain on the affected veins. Although there are no serious complications of varicose veins, they cause a considerable amount discomfort and symptoms such as swollen ankles and itching are common. Varicose veins commonly form in the elderly, in people who are overweight, and in pregnant women. Also see poor circulation. |
