Nausea is an unpleasant sensation of feeling as if one is about to vomit. It is a very common symptom associated with many conditions. Medications that may cause nausea include certain anti-biotics, anaesthetics and chemotherapy. Anxiety may also cause nausea, as can travel sickness.

The use of stimulants, such as caffeine and illegal drugs, poisons, nicotine as well as excessive alcohol intake, may cause nausea for various reasons ranging from an irritation to the lining of the stomach (see Gastritis) to an over stimulation of the nervous system. Fasting for long periods, over-indulging in food, rich food, depression and fatigue may cause nausea.

Nausea may be associated with pain, such as menstrual pain, migraines and heart attacks. There are several medical conditions which may cause nausea including the flu, kidney and liver disease, indigestion, stomach ulcers and hormonal imbalances. Pregnancy is a common cause of nausea in women (see Morning sickness), colon diseases such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, dehydration. Over exertion may cause nausea.

The cause of problem needs to be treated in order to eliminate the nausea. Ginger and peppermint have been recommended to calm the stomach and help reduce nausea. Please consult your healthcare practitioner if your symptoms have not subsided within 1 week.
