Pimples occur when the pores in your skin become blocked and the oil secreted form the oil glands cannot get out of the pores.
Frequently bacteria get trapped in the pores as well and they multiply in and cause and infection. This is why when pimples pop, pus is often released. Pus is a collection of dead and destroyed cells, usually the dead cells of the bacteria and of your body (some of your body's cells are destroyed while fighting the bacteria). Pimples commonly occur during puberty as a result of the thickening of your skin and hormonal changes which influence the oil production by your glands. Menopause and pregnancy may also increase the amount of pimples on your skin as your hormones fluctuate and change during these periods. Keeping your skin clean to reduce bacteria build up and gently exfoliating to get rid of excess dead skin on your face are helpful in reducing pimples. It is also important not to try and pop pimples prematurely or to pick them as wounds may form that may become infected. Scarring may result from repetitive skin damage from pimples which are broken and infected. The most common places that pimples occur are your face, back and chest as this is where the most oil is produced. However pimples may occur anywhere on the body. |
