Poor circulation refers to a general decrease in the body's ability to get blood to all the tissues. This may be due to low blood pressure, heart disease or diseases of the blood vessels. Signs of poor circulation include a pale, (or in severe cases blue) tinge to the area, tingling sensations, such as pins and needles and coldness of the extremities or affected area.
In individuals with poor circulation, wounds tend to heal slowly as it is more difficult for the blood to get to the wound to bring nutrients needed for tissue repair and re-growth and immune cells to fight infection. Some individuals experience painful finger tips as a result of poor blood circulation, this is known as Raynaud's phenomenon. Smoking can also reduce your blood circulation and nutritional disorders, such as anaemia affect your circulation. Other organs that may affect your circulation include your lungs as lung disease affects the amount of oxygen in your blood. Poor circulation may cause the blood in your veins to stagnate, which causes varicose veins. Some people seem to have a greater tendency to poor circulation than others. A healthy lifestyle, include plenty water and exercise and healthy eating habits strengthen your circulation system (your heart and blood vessels). |
