A post nasal drip is when excessive mucous produced from the sinuses overflows into the nasal cavity and the throat. The causes of a post nasal drip therefore depend largely on the causes of the excess mucous production by the sinuses. Sinusitis and allergies are the main causes of excess mucous production.
Symptoms of a post nasal drip include constant throat clearing, a constant desire to swallow, sore throat and a cough. The treatment of a post nasal drip is treatment of the cause. Foods that stimulate mucous production (such as dairy) should be avoided and water intake should be increased. Please consult your healthcare practitioner if your symptoms have not resolves within 6 weeks. |
