Psoriasis is a condition of the skin in which the skin becomes dry and scaly and begins to flake. The affected skin may turn a silvery white colour and the texture usually becomes rough and uneven. It commonly occurs on the bend of your joints, for example you elbows or knees, however it may be found anywhere.

Psoriasis occurs as the skin becomes inflamed, although a cause for the inflammation cannot always be found. Visually it often looks unsettling and it may cause severe itching of the affected areas. However it is not contagious. Many individuals who have psoriasis become embarrassed and wear clothing that hides their skin. This can cause a great deal of emotional and mental complications such as a lack of confidence and self loathing.

Certain things are thought to aggravate psoriasis in individuals who suffer from psoriasis, these include stress, poor eating habits, alcohol and smoking. There may also be a genetic link to psoriasis. It is a chronic disease that is difficult to treat and without treatment and successful intervention, psoriasis may last years and years. If you have psoriasis, which is causing irritation and distress, then please consult your healthcare practitioner.
