The respiratory system is a vital body system as it is responsible for the process of breathing. It contains a group of passages transport air in and out of the lungs. The process of breathing is sometimes called ?gaseous exchange' as the body rids itself of the waste gas carbon- dioxide and replaces it with oxygen. Breathing is essential for the survival of every cell in the body, without a constantly replenishing supply of oxygen, cells are unable to function and eventually die. The respiratory system is divided into the upper respiratory tract (which includes all the respiratory structures which are outside of the chest e.g. nose and throat) and lower respiratory tract (which includes all the respiratory structures which are within the chest e.g. lungs and bronchi).
Lungs The lungs are soft, spongy, cone-shaped organs located within the chest. The left and right lungs are separated by the heart. The lungs contain the air passages, air chambers (alveoli), blood vessels, connective tissues, nerves and lymphatic vessels of the lower respiratory tract. The recommended treatments are intended to support the function of the lungs and respiratory system and should be used in conjunction with, and not in place of, any medications prescribed by your healthcare practitioner. |
