Fear is a natural reaction to a situation that is threatening or dangerous (for example an intruder in our home). When we are fearful of a situation, we avoid it in an attempt to keep safe. Some people experience fear like symptoms in the absence of a dangerous situation. This may be the result of a previous situation that was similar and caused harm. An example of this may be a fear of driving in cars as a result of a previous car accident.Fears of an object, creature or situation may also be exaggerated and inappropriate, for example a fear of heights may be so severe that a person will not look out of a window on the second floor of a building.
An exposure to one's fear may result in an emotional shock and symptoms of anxiety. Sweating, palpitations, nausea, hysteria, difficulty breathing, crying and screaming are a few of the symptoms that people may experience. Insomnia and nightmares are common in children who have experienced a frightening situation, and sometimes the fear remains long after the event. Avoiding situations or objects may impact the quality of a person's life and lead to depression and isolation. Fears can range from mild to serious. If you have a phobia that is interfering with your quality of life and you feel that your fear is controlling your life then it is advisable that you talk to a healthcare practitioner or someone who can help you overcome your fear. |
