Fluid retention may be due to hormonal fluctuations or imbalances, (for example some women retain fluid during PMS), too much sodium (from salt) in their diet or kidney disease. Certain medications, oral contraceptives, pregnancy, menopause, thyroid disease and allergic reactions commonly cause oedema. Your body may also retain fluid in hot weather as a precautionary measure to avoid dehydration.

Symptoms of fluid retention are swelling and bloating. You may experience this as difficulty fitting your feet into your shoes, getting your rings onto you fingers or fastening your belt. Eating fruit rich in potassium (which helps your body excrete sodium), such as bananas and citrus fruits, may reduce water retention. Natural diuretics include cranberry juice, buchu, and celery. These increase the amount of water you excrete. Decreasing the amount of salt in your diet is also very useful, as salt (sodium chloride) encourages water retention.
